Editorial Services

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Finding high-quality editorial services can be a little bit tricky. Don’t get me wrong – there is no shortage of quality editing services available on the Web. The problem is that it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff if you do not personally know someone in the business. Anyone can set up a website offering the editorial service. Just because something looks impressive doesn’t mean that it is. Nonetheless, there are a few signs that you can use to find out whether a freelance editor is worth hiring.

As with anything, you should trust your instincts when you are looking for editorial services. If a website seems to project an air of confidence, that is a good thing. If, on the other hand, it makes unrealistic claims, you probably shouldn’t believe them. Most editorial service websites will have a list of clients that you can contact. If an editor isn’t willing to let you talk to his references, you probably should look somewhere else.

There are many different kinds of editorial services, and picking the kind you want requires a little bit of experience. Some editors do it all. These guys cost a pretty penny, but it is worth it if you have serious rewriting that needs to be done. All in one freelance editorial services include rewriting, proofreading, feedback, formatting, and even layout. Nonetheless, with editing as with anything else you get what you pay for. If you don’t need the services of a master, don’t hire a master.

If all you need is proofreading, you can probably find someone online to do it. Alternately, you can post in the local job bulletin. Many communities have job resource centers where you will be able to advertise for a proofreader. If you need something on short notice, Craigslist is an excellent way to find someone. There are always people out there willing to do a job to pick up a few extra bucks.

Finding someone to do minor rewrites is probably the trickiest of all. You need just the right kind of editor. You don’t want someone with a great editorial vision – someone who will want to work extensively with you on your piece. On the other hand, you don’t want editorial services from a hack.  You need someone who is competent, detail oriented, and somewhat creative. You just don’t want to go overboard and hire a full-service editor.
